Tobacco FREE Fiesta: A day-out celebration on Tobacco Awareness

The rainy Saturday of 14th September 2019 had us on our feet, braving the cold to celebrate the Tobacco FREE Fiesta.

This was hosted by UHCA at the Kamwokya Football Pitch.

The theme of the day was: “A day-out celebration on tobacco awareness”

Many advocates and influencers allover Kampala showed up to celebrate the achievements of the Tobacco Control initiative in Uganda.

We had different teams from Nakawa Central, Team Kawempe, Team Kamwokya, Team Rubaga and many more, who were to keep the day lively in various game competitions.

The day’s activities included; Football, Netball among others

Dignitaries from various circles and in support of the different teams graced the day.

The OBJECTIVE of celebrating the fiesta was to ensure more awareness so as to continue kicking out tobacco from the streets and slums of Kampala;

The event-celebration that had different teams compete for top prizes started as early as 8:00 am. The football pitch that was covered with mud but this never stopped the agenda of the celebrations in process. Upon arrival, the excitement of young boys in training hushed a generation of tobacco-free kids

Team Kawempe and Team Central locked horns in the first game of the day on a marshy Kamwokya Football ground. Every player’s shirt had branded messages of the dangers/effects of Tobacco-smoking. After two hours of heroic achievements and upsets, Team Nakawa was at the helm of it all. Their tobacco-free lungs indeed drove them all through to the final stages in both the men and ladies’ competitions.

Through the event, Different tobacco-advocates like Mayor of Kawempe, Mr. Ntale Ismail were invited, and they had a word with the teams and spectators on Tobacco Control measures as well as challenges.

“It is vital to check the packaging prescription cautions to avoid consuming tobacco unawarely. We are doing our best to push the cause, and tobacco usage like Shisha smoking is deadly and we are against it” –

 

Mr Ssemitego Eddie, a Community Policing Officer noted.

The day’s prize was a goat and Nakawa Central team aimed high enough to get it.

The Tobacco Control Uganda ambassador, Mrs. Sophie Gombya that handed the trophy to the Unchallenged Nakawa ladies emphatically urged both girls and boys to stay away from drugs. She emphasized the dangers and effects of tobacco smoking.

The celebrations ended on a high note of appraisals and awarding of special players/contributors in different sports of the day.

Conclusions:

Sports and games are one of the arenas we shall continue using to spread the gospel of a Tobacco-Free generation. With the streets being one of the most affected areas, we believe your voice matters. Kindly join us in this campaign of saving lives.
